The book I read in the past weeks is called Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini. It is the story of a sixteen year old boy named Jeremy Heere, who is in love with a girl named Christine. Jeremy doesn’t have many friends, until everyone starts talking about a strange pill named ‘Squip’. The Squip is said to be a miniature computer that comes in a pill, and when a person eats it, the computer starts talking to them, and helping them with their social and academic life.
When Jeremy finally has his own Squip, his own computer inside his head, his life changes completely. The Squip communicates directly with his brain to make him Cool. It tells his what to wear, how to talk, and who to ignore. The Squip transforms Jeremy from a complete geek to a high-status-hottie. Jeremy finds himself hanging with the most popular guys in school, and dating the coolest girls.
After some time though, he discovers that in some ways, he misses his old way life, and most of all, his old friends. The climax of the story takes place when Jeremy is at a party at Chloe’s house. (Chloe is the second most popular girl in Jeremy’s grade). At the party there is a huge fire that leaves three of Jeremy’s classmates in the Hospital with serious injuries, all this because of the Squip. Also, the Squip’s plans to make Christine his girlfriend have not at all been successful. Jeremy realizes that although the Squip may bring some good things, the consequences that those good things drag along are not worth all the trouble & suffering. Finally, Jeremy decides to get rid of the Squip, and live his old life with only a few changes.
